Follow the Rules

Any open fire is potentially dangerous. Therefore, check with your local fire department before purchasing a home fire pit. Confirm that wood-burning fire pits are allowed in your area. If your home is part of a homeowner’s association, it should be able to provide specific guidelines.

If fires are allowed, follow these general guidelines issued by the National Fire Protection Association. Generally, the state will require that a bucket, garden hose, or fire extinguisher be available before lighting a fire. You should also pay close attention to children and pets around the fire and not allow them to get too close.

Choose a suitable location

It is recommended that the wood-burning fire pit be placed at least 25 feet from any structure or flammable material. In addition to buildings, including overhanging branches, grass, shrubs, and bushes, as well as leaves and tree limbs. And choose a level area. Avoid dry and windy conditions, as light winds can quickly blow away the embers around your fire and yard. Also, don't forget to respect your neighbors: choose an area that's not too close to or directly upwind of their property.

How to Light a Fire

Lighting a fire is not rocket science, but it does require a skill. Assuming you have a quality wood-burning fire pit, you'll need three items to make it work. These are split hardwood logs, some kindling, and an igniter. Begin by arranging your logs in a conical or pyramidal shape (a point pointing skyward). If your logs are too long, stack them into a rectangle. They should touch each other but have enough room for air to flow.

Next, place your kindling at the bottom of the log tent. Small branches that have fallen from the trash pile in your yard work well for this. Then sit the kindling inside the fire in the igniter. Wax fire starters are just as effective as the pressed cardboard variety. You can also use newspaper and cardboard scraps of paper towels in a pinch.

Closure

Unlike charcoal grills, wood-burning fire pits do not have adjustable vents. Some fire pit manufacturers will instruct you to wait until the fire extinguishers naturally. Only use water to extinguish a fire in an emergency. Doing so will immediately create steam and hot debris. Even if the remaining coals appear to be out, wait at least 12 hours before disposing of them.
